Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle, but it may also play a role in hair growth. Research suggests that melatonin may promote hair growth by stimulating hair follicles and regulating hair growth cycles.
Studies have shown that melatonin can increase the proliferation of cells in the hair follicles, leading to increased hair growth. Additionally, melatonin may also protect hair follicles from damage caused by oxidative stress, which can contribute to hair loss.
In a small study published in the International Journal of Trichology, researchers found that applying a melatonin solution to the scalp of women with diffuse hair loss resulted in a significant increase in hair density and hair thickness after six months of treatment.
However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of melatonin on hair growth, and to determine the optimal dosage and application method for maximum benefits. It's also important to note that while melatonin supplements are widely available, there is no evidence that taking oral melatonin supplements will improve hair growth. Individuals should always consult with a healthcare professional before using melatonin supplements or topical products on their hair.
